One day we stopped at the Emir's stables to gaze at his horses grazing quietly on oats and hay in the stable yard. These beautiful animals live in a "palace" - very well appointed abode for a very regal animal. They are very friendly, trotting up to the white pillared pole fence to be petted, obviously used to the attentions of visitors.
According to my research, the Arabian horse dates back 4,500 years, originating in the desert and schooled by the Bedouin. The Arabian has become world dominant for breeding, endurance racing and equestrian activity. It is known for its good nature, intelligence and its spirit. Interesting fact: the horse has a black skin that protects it from the desert sun.
The Arabian has a symbolic relationship with the Bedouin, who call it the "bringer of the wind". Apparently the north wind gave it spirit, the southern wind strength, east gave speed and the west brought intelligence. Legend has it that the Prophet Mohammed (pbuh) sent the Arabians out into the desert to journey to an oasis for water. Near the oasis, he called them to return and only five turned back. He named those five Al Khamsa (the five) who are the legendary founders of the five choice strains of the Arabian breed.
Prophet Mohammed (pbuh) said of the Arabian: "I give thee flight without wings"
Beautiful animals indeed.
